Ode to Ossetia

August 11, 2008

What is that illuminating the night sky in Ossetia?

Were the fireworks not in Beijing?

Dear friend, this is not fireworks

The Georgians are coming.

Quickly, get your children,

They have futures, dreams…

We’ve but memories

Of how things here used to be

Tell my wife that I love her

More than Ossetia’s pride

but I must go forth

Lest Ossetia dies

The bombs are still falling

the villagers, still running

Where are the Russians?

The Georgians are coming!

Take this gun

You trained and recruit?

Good, when they come

Just aim it and shoot

I recognize those planes

Swooping and gunning

Thank Goodness! At last!

The Russians are coming!

Which way to Abkhazia?

The hills are too bare

I’d have taken shelter in Tskhinvali

but nothing’s left there

As our brothers do our bidding

and as our children keep safe

far from this madness

We must make our escape

This way to Abkhazia

said the man on the bus

Ossetia’s in ruins?

May the Georgians be crushed!!

Oh Vasily, Dmitry

…My flowers of joy

I pray that you’re safe

My brave little boys

When I think of this catastrophe

and our refugees running

I hope that some day the whole world says

“The Russians are coming!”
